The 2025 assessment examined the 100 largest retail chains in Brazil, as ranked by revenue according to the Brazilian Supermarket Association (Associação Brasileira de Supermercados – ABRAS). This evaluation analyzed each company’s Supply Chain Control Score, measuring how effective their commitments are in eliminating deforestation from their cattle supply chains, based on two main criteria:

  • Existence of a policy (20% weight)
  • Effective implementation of the policy (80% weight)

Policies were analyzed using publicly available documents and disclosures, while implementation was assessed through verified sustainability reports or independent audits demonstrating control over both direct and indirect supplier farms.

Each retailer’s score was calculated separately for the level of control required from meatpackers over direct and indirect farms. Direct farms are those responsible for the final fattening stage before slaughter, supplying cattle directly to slaughterhouses. Indirect farms are where calves are born and raised before being sent to the fattening stage.

This year, there was a significant increase in the number of companies with active websites — from 46 in 2024 to 76 in 2025 — substantially expanding the analytical scope and strengthening the database available for evaluation. Twenty-four companies (24%) had no website or displayed an “under maintenance” page during the evaluation period (June 9 to July 9, 2025).

Despite the broader sample, the results showed no progress: 97% of retailers were classified as having very low control (0–29 points, red), an increase from 2024 (95.5%). No company reached the intermediate (50–69 points, yellow) or high (70–89 points, light green) control levels.

The number of retailers conducting audits of direct-supplier farms and demonstrating control over this segment remained unchanged, with only three companies: Assaí, Carrefour, and GPA.
