 Febraban SARB 026/2023 Self-Regulation

SARB 026/2023, established by Febraban in March 2023, instructs signatory banks to make credit to meatpackers and slaughterhouses conditional on the adoption of protocols that prove the absence of illegal deforestation throughout the beef supply chain — including direct and indirect suppliers. Financial institutions had until December 2023 to comply, while slaughterhouses were required to report by March 30, 2024, on the progress made since December 2023 and, thereafter, update their indicators annually. These indicators must include the percentage of cattle tracked back to direct and indirect suppliers and indicate whether third parties audit the data.

Since 2024, Radar Verde has publicly identified which slaughterhouses disclose information in line with SARB 026/2023. In practice, the standard raises the level of sustainability and transparency required by the financial system; therefore, slaughterhouses must publish transparent and audited indicators, demonstrating compliance and preserving access to credit.

The specific indicators to be disclosed to comply with SARB 026/2023 are:

Slaughterhouses that reported performance to comply with SARB 026/2023

In 2025, there was a slight improvement in the sector’s adherence to self-regulation, with the number of companies disclosing the required information increasing from 18 in 2024 to 23. The list below shows the meatpackers that, in 2025, published the indicators required by SARB 026/2023 (traceability of direct and indirect suppliers and audit information) on their official websites. The map in Figure 2 shows the geographic distribution of these companies, their slaughter capacity, and potential purchasing areas in the Legal Amazon, highlighting where transparency has advanced and which regions have the most significant purchasing influence.
