Introduction
Radar Verde is an annual index developed in 2023 jointly by the O Mundo Que Queremos Institute (OMQQ) and the Institute of Man and Environment of the Amazon (Imazon) to assess the performance of policies to combat deforestation in the Legal Amazon implemented by meatpacking companies and retailers.
Radar Verde aims to provide visibility into companies’ performance regarding commitments to combat illegal deforestation and other socioenvironmental crimes, as well as to encourage the entire beef supply chain to adopt increasingly effective practices to mitigate these illegal activities.
In the 2026 edition, the assessment considers two important links in the beef supply chain: meatpacking companies and retailers. Meatpacking companies play an important role in the socioenvironmental compliance of the beef supply chain, as they are responsible for monitoring cattle purchases from their supplying farms, both direct and indirect, based on strict criteria and total deforestation policies covering legal and illegal deforestation. By implementing monitoring and traceability systems, they can ensure that the beef placed on the market is not associated with deforested areas.
Retailers, in turn, have the power to influence the production chain by adopting socioenvironmental criteria when selecting their suppliers and by offering products from deforestation-free supply chains. In addition, they can inform and engage consumers, encouraging more sustainable choices and demanding greater transparency from their suppliers.
Based on the assessment results, Radar Verde answers four fundamental questions:
Through this analysis, the Radar Verde indicator provides essential information to consumers, investors, financial institutions, meatpacking companies, retailers, processors, producers, and other stakeholders, enabling more informed and responsible decisions.
The results are widely disseminated through reports published on the project’s official website, in the press, on social media, and at national and international events. In this way, Radar Verde has become established as an independent and reliable source for those seeking to reduce the environmental impact of cattle ranching in the Amazon.
Objectives
The 2026 edition of Radar Verde aims to verify whether meatpacking companies operating in the Legal Amazon and the country’s leading retailers adopt effective socioenvironmental policies and practices to prevent their beef supply chains from being associated with legal or illegal deforestation.
Through a detailed questionnaire, the tool analyzes the level of commitment and control demonstrated by companies regarding the origin of the animals, as well as the transparency of the information they disclose.
Finally, Radar Verde presents companies’ performance on a scale from 0 to 100 points. The higher the score in this assessment, the stronger the evidence that the company has commitments to eliminating deforestation from the beef supply chain.
1.Total deforestation includes all cleared native vegetation, encompassing both legal deforestation, carried out with authorization and within the limits established by legislation for each biome, and illegal deforestation, which occurs in violation of the law. Illegal deforestation includes the clearing of vegetation in protected areas, such as Indigenous Lands and Conservation Units, as well as the removal of vegetation beyond the percentage permitted for a rural property. In the Amazon, for example, the Forest Code generally requires that 80% of native vegetation be maintained, allowing deforestation of up to 20% of the farm area, except in cases otherwise provided for by law.Este site usa cookies para melhorar a sua experiência enquanto navega pelo site.
